I heard Ed Fast just attended one of those events? I enjoy some of those fights and was amazed when the California Kid was beat recently.

I think I would enjoy them alot more if they would let kids/teens know its not cool to act like that and fight in the streets as a trend and that they are[supposed to be] pro's and only fight in structured matches and rings? Dont get me wrong, it's a great sport but it's culture needs work. No I do not have kids but I live across the street from an Alpha school and their favorite shirts are Tapout and their favorite word is B****. It would be easy for UFC fighters to be good role models and in times like these we need them, strong ones like those guys. Imagine the influence Uriah could have on youth in L.A.? What do you folks think?

"Hey Kids, I know IM a kick butt fighter and dominate everyone in the ring but I dont like to fight punks on the streets just for fun, I keep it in the ring! When I need to fight I hit the gem and work on my weaknesses, Be cool keep it in the ring ;)"

LOL, silly attempt, I think someone else could find a cooler way to say..

But yea cool stuff, all over my VS channel....

I agree, they could be better role models, but in general I think they do a pretty good job. I think that most viewers know that they are trained professionals, but it's also natural for kids to act that kind stuff out, and sport the gear and brands their favorite fighters do.

I remember way back when the WWF was HUGE!! All the kids were sporting Hulkster shirts, and the craziness of Backyard wrestling was born..The only real danger of the UFC that I see for kids is the submission by choke. I can just see some buddies goofing around and really hurting(or worse) each other trying to pull off a rear naked choke, guillotine, or some other kind of submission that cuts off air, and having something bad happen out of lack of training. Not that I'm a big fan of kids trying arm bars or kamuras, but that has to be better than trying that.

But yeah, there should be some "JackAzz" or South Park type of warning at the beginning of every broadcast, even the PPV.....

Good points, never thought about the submission locks....It really boils down to what you said about "lack of Training" I mean yea a skateboard can cause more injury than most honest 1 on 1 fights.

When I was in karate the fist thing we learned was simply how to fall, without injury and for weeks I could not understand why we had to keep falling over and over each class every week for months, at least until someone knocked me down ;) Sounds silly but can keep you from head injury. IM assuming thos fighters have all that type of training background.

Some do. Alot come from wrestling, and judo, or jiu-jitsu backgrounds, and the rest are mostly boxers/kickboxers that have crossed over. The "Mixed" in MMA is really a true statement. I have a Vale Tudo Jiu-Jitsu base, and have done Savate, and Muy Thai for years to try and get a half decent stand-up game. So, yes, the mixed thing is prevolent in todays fighters. Which makes it so entertaining to watch. Like my styles for instance. A frech sailors fighting base mixed with South American ground skills, and some asian based striking to round it out. Some of the best fighters have the strangest roots. Chuck Liddell used to do Ken'po. A very vicious stand-up fighting style. Based around what is now known as "ground and pound." Lyoto Machida fights a lesser known version of civilian Karate, and has adapted it to work with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and MMA as a whole. Google MMA in Portland, and you will find all kinds of legitimate fight leagues, and organizations. FCFF, which is pretty well headlined by a local boy, Chael Sonnen, a WEC welterweight. Who should have the title, but Paulo Filho didn't make weight, so no title was up for grabs when Chael beat him down. And Chris, air chokes can do damege. Given enough force on the windpipe, very true. Blood chokes take less time to apply, and have potential to do more damage, alot quicker. Still, they take time to really do permanent damage. But I hope no kids are going to hold their buddies in a darce, or an arm in guilllotine for minutes on end to cause damage. But joint lock submissions are far more damaging. A single Kimura can explode a rotator cuff, or crack the ball off the shoulder in less than 5 seconds from intial arm hold, to full submission. Same with arm bars. A properly trained 9 year old could shatter Lou Ferigno's elbow in 2 seconds flat. Easily. At least in MMA they don't let you try to stand up after a flash KO puts you down. 10 seconds is plenty of time to recover from a little flash knockout. And boxers can get put to their knees as many as 15 times per fight. That has got to be absolutely terrible on their brains. As far as the professional fighting goes. UFC/WEC, and MMA in general are under such a tight microscope, there is no room for eff ups, and participants who really don't care about the viewers. The people that paid to come, are essentially paying their checks after fight night. Great stuff on VS, and the free view UFC's, but look around the local area if 40 bucks doesn't sound aapplealing to get a fight to your TV. The Salem Armory had one a couple weeks ago, and the Roseland has regular competitions as well. Everyone interested in Martial arts shoud definately check out a live, local event.

My boys love to fight wrestle with the neighbors and they come home with bruises and black eyes quit frequently. I had to put a stop to it till they get the proper head gear cause my oldest came home with broken cartiledge in his ear and his nose messed up.

This one should be good if everyone is in good shape, and up to it mentally. For sure. The last one was actually one of the better MMA disaplays the UFC has put together in recent history. The fighters were ready, and the sell-out crowd was rowdy! Kids who like to backyard wrastle could always get into something like MMA, or Greco Roman wrestling, or Jiu-Jitsu in Gresham. The infamous Randy Couture calls it his premanent home. And I think some Summer classes that run a couple times a month, are either free, or something along the lines of bring a can of soup to donate, and get 4-6 hours of formal, professional instruction for it. I know thats how it was when I was a kid, and it probably hasn't changed much. But it is fun to watch, and fun to be a part of, even if not in formal competition.
