Well, I went and got a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 and I must say, I love the picture quality, features, and everything but one thing.....I don't want to take it fishing with me because I'm afraid to damage it.
So, with that said, I suggest something water proof from the Olympus Stylus line.

There are other waterproof/shockproof cameras out there but these seem to have gotten some of the better reviews from what I remember when I was looking.

I just bought a waterproof HD video and still photo combo it is a sanyo xacti it was 399 through costco it works well for doing family video to share and you can get really good quality film and stills if you set it right, I don't know if it would good enough for someone who is making a living doing videoe/photo work but the underwater part is cool.

Both of these aforementioned cameras... You can throw a memory stick and batteries in, and dunk 'em. Straight outta the box? I love undy water shots. A bud in AK does alot of 'em. Like this, of a Sockeye turning tail, and headed for the Redds.

I have a nikon coolpix and a canon powershot A470, they both eat batteries like no ones business but they take decent pictures and are small cameras that fit in your pocket.

Yup straight out of the box for the Olympus models. Some are safe to 10ft of pressure, others to 33ft.
