View Full Version : Waking up to a Kidney Stone SUCKS!

I had one before a couple years ago so I know what they feel like. I woke up this morning and knew right away I was in for some "fun". At about 5:15 I started to take a shower because I thought the warm water would feel good, and I wanted to feel somewhat fresh in the hospital. Before I got in the shower, I woke up Fabi and told her I think I have another stone and to get Dani ready for a trip to the Hospital. Sure enough once I got out of the quick shower, I knew by the building pain that it was a stone. The real crappy thing about these things is they don't slowly build in pain, it builds in multiples...you don't go from 1 to 2 to 3 etc. You go from 1 to 2 to 4 to 8.
Anyway, we get to the Hospital, go through all the processes to get a bed, and drugs....AH sweet drugs, my pain was at a 9 when they finally got them in me (about 20 minutes after I got there). That's the worst part to me, you get to the Hospital, and it still takes another 20+ minutes to get any relief from the pain. Anyway, after 2 hours there, the let me go with another shot of the good stuff and a perscription for codine. And I've spent almost the whole day laying in bed half awake, half sleeping, waiting for this thing to get the hell out of my body.
For those of you who've never had to deal with it. Here's the jist of it. You're moving a stone that's roughly the size of one of those annoying pebbles that get in your shoes while walking, through a tube that's the diameter of a human hair. Yup, the tube that goes from the kidney to the bladder is the size of a human hair....so all the fluid that backs up behind it makes your kidney swell and just breathing in deep hurts like hell.
Anyway, that's how my day's going. Hot flashes, dry heaving, and lots of pain. The last one took 28 days to pass. I really really really hope this one passes a lot sooner.

Hang in there Gabe we are pulling for you. I am sorry to hear that you are going through this. Although I have never had a stone before my Gastroenterologist says what I just went through is about the same pain. I hope it passes quickly for you. Good luck.

Oh I just thought of something a female friend of mine would get them really easy when she was pregnant and it was from drinking to much milk and I've heard the same thing about soda its from the calcium whether plain or carbonate but your body has to put the extra somewhere.

Thanks everyone :) I'm wide awake right now from sleeping all day, it seems as though the pressure on the kidney has lessened, and I think I'm onto the next stage. I haven't had to have any painkillers since 4pm, and I've been a bit more mobile.
I have to admit, I've been pretty bad about drinking water for the past few months. I love coffee in the morning, and milk in the evening so, not to forget the occasionaly beer. I need to get back on track there. I'm definatly going to have this stone analized to see what my issues are.
Mainly, from what I understand is you need water to keep flushing the junk out of your kidneys, caffiene and alcohol both make fluids pass through too quickly and they don't drag the junk with them so then it all clusters up and forms a stone.
Thank goodness I get to work from home tomorrow.

Well I was all good until about 10:30 this morning and then the little bugger decided to let me know it's still around :) Thankfully, I'm at home so I just took the pills and laid down for my lunch hour, but it's not consistant pain like it was yesterday morning....maybe that's just the drugs HAHA.
Anywho, back to wondering if I'm going to be fishing tomorrow morning before work. Can't wait to get my line wet again.

Hope you get better bro.
Thanks :) It's still hanging around, the drugs are capable of keeping it under control so I'm good till I pass it or go see the doctor for a refill.

I can only imagine. The last pain I went through was when my back went out for two weeks. I couldn't drive or sit or even lie down for that matter!
Well hope it passes soon. You don't want to miss any fishing in the coming weeks :-)

That's niiiiiice! There's something spiritual about fishing early in the morning.

we used to go to church a lot when I was little and after a while my dad stopped going he said he felt closer to god when he was out riding our horses and I know what he means after spending a few morning watching the sun come up waiting to cast. but the real reason was because they padded the pews and he would fall asleep Ha-Ha.

I had a good morning, didn't catch any fish but it was nice to be out there with the nice crisp clean air, and the light breeze.
The damn thing passed this morning, YAY, my kidney is still sore but, now it's the healing process.
