    Default Startin' skills.

Every 1 has their own preferred technique, lures, action, and all sorts of things for when it comes to bass fishing. So, what is your preferred skill when it comes to bass fishing??

Mine happens to be Crank baits! Anytime I fish a new location and know there are rocks nearby or a deep channel, i'll toss a few to bang on the bottom to find those aggressive predators!

I have to admit, when it comes to shallow water, I'm a huge fan of spinnerbaits, especially in the spawn season Theres just something magical about casting over some lily pads right when the sun comes up only to have your pole yanked on from the waters edge!

I hope every 1 can share something here, even if its not bass fishing! Every 1 has their own fun technique!

P.S. If you want big fish, use a big lure!!

When im fishing for Smallmouth I like to use Crankbaits and spoons. Like rapala X-Raps and Kastmasters.
Then when I fish largemouth I start out with a 4" gary yamamoto watermelon senko and drag it along the bottom. Or if its weeedy I use the Weightless Texas rig and drag it over the top of weeds stopping in the gaps.

I'm all about the jerkbaits. Nothing like twitch twitch SLAM!

Spinnerbaits have been my new backup and that's fun because it's not the same slam as the jerk, it's more like grab and run, plus the smaller bass tend to leave them alone more than the jerkbaits. I've only caught 1#+ bass on the spinnerbaits while the jerkbaits have caught fish that were smaller than the lure itself.

I must admit, I really want to get to a place where I can top water some day, I hear that's the highest of highs when it comes to the take.

If I can get them on top my go to is a prop bait or zara spook. That is my favorite method, and often I can turn some pretty big fish! On one or the other lol. I have been slow rolling spinner baits this year with mild success. Both of these have been on my top list for about 30 years so I think I got the method itself down. Patterning warm water fishes is most often the real challenge in the game./..

Funny you say that Trout, anytime I fish for smallmouth I tend to use X raps as well, but I even switch to some of my steelhead spinners if they are a bit finicky! Seems to catch them off guard

I dont really know how to use a jerkbait to be honest with you spade, I'v used the classic jointed kind before and have caught a few decent fish but I could never get the trick down to the right twitches. Top waters?? You'd love it down here, there are tons of bass, as well as the occasional perch who are willing to explode out of the water after a popper or buzzbait!

Matt, I'm starting to think most fisherman will use a spinnerbait at some point in time and fall in love with it. I gotta say, thats a beauty of a small mouth! Cant wait to get into some of them this fall!

Jerkbaits are slender floaters/semi-floaters like the X-Rap or Rapala Original. While you're doing a retrieve give it short 3" twitch every now and then, it flashes like a wounded bait fish and drives the bass nuts!

I'll typically do about 4-5 cranks on the reel and then a twitch or two then from that point on it's just random twitching from 1 to 3 twitches while still reeling in. Test it out in front of you on a short 10' cast and see what the bait does, it's yummy looking. Note: you can also twitch a spinnerbait.

I don't know much about bass fishing specifically, like Matt said I have a hard time getting consistent results, but since I don't know a lot about bass specific methods I just go straight to the tried and true, a spinner. After the spinner stops working I bust out my rapala count downs and start working those. I caught this fish on a lake at the coast a few years back, I'd never fished there before and I figured all that was in the lake would be small trout, so I started chucking my small brass bladed spinner and man was I suprised when I hooked this thing!

That Ryan, is a pig!! hahaa, that looks to be a good solid 3-4 pound largemouth! haha very true as well, i'v used a few spinner down here with some crazy success, "When in doubt, spinners bring them out" hahaha, Gorgous fish ryan!

On another note, Spade, I'm trying out the classic jerkbait from rapala, black n white combo. I'v caught only 1 fish tho so far after you told me bout it but it was a nice lil 2 pounder. I'll be trying to jerk spinnerbaits along the reeds to see if anything is gunna cooperate!
