I think I researched Alaska for many years before going. My father did not have any interest in taking me so I spent many years doing exactly as Ed recommends...reading.....At some point I gave up trying to get there and it was not until some ten years later I made a trip with Mike Braun for 2 weeks. I think having the knowledge I did, along with what Mike found as well....it seemed as though we knew what to do from the get go. A simple brush up of current regs and locations was all I needed, even if we did intend to hire a guide, and we often do. A problem on the lower Kenai is that access is often restricted so if you intend to throw lower-ish Kenai in your mix for a day or 3 down around Soldotna, I really do suggest you let a guide put you out on the river in a boat. It is money well spent, and only a fraction of your trips overall cost. This will also help to get away from ******** activity that is common on public catwalks.
I have since been back again, and Mike has learned the roaps well around the Kenai Pin......but that first trip was great because we already had much of the knowledge we needed.
Your not ready to go now but start your learning now instead.
Good luck Chris
