Tillamook Bay Fishing: Salmon and steelhead bound for 5 different rivers pass through the jaws of Tillamook bay providing an amazing opportunity for northwest anglers. Garidaldi harbor is a popular launch and is often used as a gateway to crabbing and ocean fishing for salmon, halibut, tuna, and rockfish. In recent years tuna fishing has been outstanding off the Oregon coast as close in as 10 miles. Charters can be booked in Garibaldi if your out for salmon, halibut and tuna. White and green sturgeon also move in and out of Tillamook bay seasonally. The salmon fishing starts in the ocean during the summer months then moves in closer to an area known as the bubble just outside the jetty line. On calm ocean days anglers will fish the incoming tides between the jetty's with herring but caution is strongly advised for boaters in the bar area when bad weather starts to move in. Next stop is the ghost hole were salmon are passing by what can be hundreds of boats with eager anglers on each fishable high tide. Many of the fish here may turn into the Wilson river tidewater and others will continue South to the Tillamook and Trask rivers. Fish bound for south bay rivers will often start to slow and mill around in the Oyster House area and in tidewater waiting for rains. When the water is on the rise they move swiftly and can make 10 miles or more a day during periods of high water. Guided salmon fishing trips are a growing industry here and if it is numbers of fish you are looking for it may be to your advantage to book. Some of the rivers that flow into the bay such as the Wilson and Trask rivers are very well known for salmon and steelhead fishing at certain times of the year. Some solitude may be found fishing in the rivers after each rain. Some popular spots may have large groups of anglers but there are many great stretches of water to fish in the rivers of Tillamook that only take a bit of poking around to find. Steelhead are not often fished for in the bay itself but the winter steelhead run in this area is doing well as of this publishing with brood stock programs are creating solid, safe, balanced and practical fisheries for many years to come. There is only one hatchery in Tillamook located on the Trask river. Additional plants from the private owned Tillamook Anglers hatchery located on Netarts bay also helps to keep the cycle of salmon going. The Tillamook bay area has much to see and offer for the outdoor enthusiast. While fishing and crabbing are the main draw to the area, simply enjoying the many beaches and parks can be rewarding enough. Netarts Bay offers a pleasent walk just a few minutes away from town.
